Louis Vuitton x Takashi Murakami Inspired Nail Art | Watch Me Work
The return of the Louis Vuitton x Takashi Murakami collection had me feeling nostalgic for one of the most iconic fashion collaborations of the early 2000s.
As an elder millennial (I graduated college in 2005), I remember the original Louis Vuitton x Takashi Murakami collaboration very well. It was peak Marc Jacobs-era Louis Vuitton. Bright, fun, colorful, and absolutely everywhere. The multicolored monogram bags were in magazines, on celebrities, and all over the internet before social media was even really a thing.
When I moved from a small town to Orange County for college, I spent more than a few afternoons that should have been spent in class wandering around South Coast Plaza with my fresh $500-limit Capital One credit card, imagining I was the Costa Mesa Carrie Bradshaw. At the time, I didn't have much of a frame of reference for fashion history, but looking back, both Louis Vuitton and I were most certainly in our era of whimsy. Neither of us was making particularly practical decisions, but we were having a great time.
More than twenty years later, seeing the collection return instantly transported me back to the early 2000s and inspired this colorful nail set. Rather than recreating a specific Louis Vuitton bag or accessory, I pulled together some of my favorite elements from the collaboration, including the colorful floral motifs, geometric details, and candy-colored palette that made the collection so memorable.
I also filmed a behind-the-scenes process video while painting this look. It's very sped up (you're welcome for that). Please note, I am apparently allergic to staying in frame when I film, so you'll have to use your imagination for some of the details.
