Let’s dive into summer with Kokoist’s new Unicorn Mermaid Magnet Collection. It’s been such a treat watching the evolution of magnetic gel colors within the nail industry over the past few years. What used to feel like a one-trick pony has fully evolved into a nail art workhorse, and Kokoist continues to push magnet gels in a really elevated direction.
Consider the Unicorn Mermaid Magnet collection the moodier, aquatic counterpoint to the Unicorn Candy Magnet collection. With a soft viscocity, a base that walks the line between milky and jelly, and ultra-fine, glassy, shade-shifting magnetic particles, this collection feels especially dimensional and sophisticated. While the texture aligns most closely with the Water Magnet and Satin Magnet collections, the color story and refined multichromatic shimmer remind me a bit more of the Dramatic Magnet collection.
If you tend to gravitate toward moodier magnet gels, I think this collection strikes a really nice balance between aquatic summer shades and deeper transitional colors. They still feel fresh and luminous for summer, but I can already picture them carrying beautifully into fall.
Even though this is a smaller three-color collection, the shades feel curated and cohesive rather than overwhelming, and each color brings something unique to the table.
While creating my swatches, I decided to lean into the deeper side of the shade range and used a super thin, barely-there layer of Bottle’n Go Color Gel in BG-26 Antique Sepia, which is a sheer brownish mauve. For a more intense look and added depth, I applied a demagnetized first layer, then magnetized the second layer for a more dimensional, velvety effect. If you want something softer and more ethereal, stick with a single magnetized layer.
I’m also a very well-documented fan of the Max Magnet because it gets the particles movin’ and groovin’ quickly and intensely, but experimenting with different magnet styles can create a ton of unique movement and effects with this collection.
