Standard gel manicures will typically last about two weeks on most people- some more and some less. The state of the natural nail plate and lifestyle well as at home care (a.k.a. cuticle oil) will all affect the lifespan of your mani.
I use a curated selection of brands that I’ve found to consistently deliver on performance and durability- most are Japanese or North American made. I’m a major advocate for quality product crafted with my needs at a manicurist and your needs as a client in mind. Brands I use include: Presto, Kokoist, Ageha, Pregel, Riccagel, Young Nails, Aprés, Luminary, Vetro, BioSeaweed Gel, Akzentz and Medusa).
The lure and satisfaction of picking off chipped gel polish or overgrown enhancements has overcome most of us at some point in time. You may notice that your nails are flimsy, sensitive and quick to break. If this sounds like your nails, I recommend finding a manicurist you connect with and keeping regular appointments. Keep your nails short and tidy, resist the urge to buff them, use cuticle oil at least twice daily- it can take months to get your nails back in shape.
Be gentle with your nails, they feel hard because they are coated in gel but excessive tapping and bottle opening, etc… can cause your mani to break down.
Use cuticle oil at least twice a day- I recommend incorporating it into your morning and evening skincare routine.
Wear gloves when you clean- excessive soaking and abrasive cleaners can discolor your nails and cause your gel to breakdown.
Be consistent with your manicures (every 2-3 weeks) and communicate your goals, lifestyle and concerns with your manicurist. Your nail health is a team effort!
Do not pick off your gel. Picking off your gel tears up your nail plate and will guarantee future manicures won’t last.
A Structured Gel Manicure (also called a Gel Overlay) is an elevated manicure technique where the product is placed on the nail to provide maximum shock-absorption, strength and growth support. I recommend it for all of my clients- especially those with weakened nails, physically demanding jobs (bartenders, waitresses, retail employees, moms…) or those who would like to grow out their natural nails. For Structured Gel Manicure services I use Luminary Multi-Flex Gel- it’s Vegan, Made in the USA and 5-Free.
I do have options available that are both Vegan Friendly and Cruelty Free. If you are requesting this, please let me know at the time of booking. Vegan Friendly Brands: Akzentz, BioSeaweed Gel, Luminary, Light Elegance, Young Nails and Medusa. Kokoist are both vegan friendly in the USA. Dazzle Dry Nail Lacquer is also both vegan and cruelty free.
Ok, so I know this SOUNDS right- it’s not. Your nails receive all of their oxygen from your blood supply. Your nail plate (the part that gets painted) is dead keratin. If you want or need to take a break from gel, get it removed properly and keep them short.
As a licensed manicurist, I uphold an extremely stringent cleaning and disinfection routine. After being used on ONE client, soiled reusable implements (i.e. nail clippers, metal cuticle pushers, cuticle nippers) are thoroughly washed with soap and water and then soaked in an EPA registered, virucidal, bactericidal, fungicidal and tuberculocidal hospital grade disinfectant (I use Lucas-Cide EPA Registration #10324-141-3974). All disposable materials (paper towels, nail files, buffers, orange wood sticks) are thrown away after use and are not shared between clients. All hard surfaces (nail table, inside of nail lamps, etc…) are disinfected between clients with as well.
